A group of Peruvian congress members presented four legislative proposals on Friday seeking to annul the supreme decree through which President Dina Boluarte approved a salary increase exceeding 100%, raising her monthly pay from 15,600 soles (around 4,400 USD) to more than double that amount.

The initiatives, led by legislators Jaime Quito, Sigrid Bazán, Silvana Robles, and Édgard Reymundo, describe the measure as disproportionate and ill-timed given the country’s current economic difficulties and low government approval ratings.

Bazán criticized the decision, calling it “an unreasonable choice considering the administration’s low approval ratings and its disregard for the impact such a measure has on citizens amid the ongoing economic crisis.”

Reymundo added that the salary hike “bears no relation to the president’s performance and lacks a valid justification.” He emphasized that the current administration has caused “division and crises across various sectors, with citizen insecurity being the most pressing issue.”

Simultaneously, the Congressional Oversight Commission unanimously approved a proposal for the Parliament’s president, Eduardo Salhuana, to summon President Boluarte to a plenary session of Congress to provide explanations regarding the decree.

Juan Burgos, head of the commission, stated, “This salary increase is widely criticized and seen as an affront to Peru. In a democratic state, we must demand transparency, honesty, and accountability appropriate to the circumstances.”

The executive decision has sparked strong reactions within Congress amid high public disapproval of the government and increasing social unrest related to security concerns, unemployment, and rising living costs.
